A Study in Obsession.

When I was just a young lad, I was obsessed with mystery novels. Between the ages of 9 and twelve or so, I’m quite sure I only read mystery novels (besides Calvin & Hobbes; pre-Harry Potter). For years I’ve been wanting and meaning to read Sherlock Holmes. This past fall, when I finally got into Doctor Who while designing/making/developing a bow tie line (appropriate), I saw a trailer for Sherlock and immediately knew (/already did) I would fall in love/obsession with it. Well, my prediction came true this past week, and I’ve been watching nothing else (as well as involving my roommate in my lust for Sherlock.)

Tonight, instead of attending a social/movie event, a friend and I bought the complete Sherlock Holmes set and spent the evening taking turns reading to each other aloud. Best. Decision. Ever.

I have my love of bow ties, and alongside it The Doctor. With this long coming love of Sherlock Holmes, and a summer to be filled with projects, the only logical conclusion is crocheted pipes:

Hand made Thank You cards!

The paper source(s), the pulp, and the result. The stamp is hand carved softoluem. I made over 100 sheets, and printed 75: all as a friend’s wedding present. Now she can thank people who came to her wedding!
(note: the cards look very dull in the photo, but I promise they’re a lovely pale mint green; a bit lighter than the pulp.)

Hopefully making more this month, to sell and such. Let me know if you’re interested!

My friend is getting married this weekend, so for a wedding present I’m making her Thank You notes! I carved out this stamp last night, and the next couple of days will involve making paper in my basement. I think I’ll do a 50% flax, 25% abaca, and 25% kozo blend: the flax is white, the abaca is an off-white/light tan, and the kozo is green. I’m hoping for a nice spring leaf/minty green. Probably just stick with black pigment for the stamp. Although… I do have a good pearly opaque white kicking around… hmm…

Great news! Next week, Thursday May 24th, is the opening of the Inclusive Research Design Centre at OCAD University. Coinciding with the building’s opening is the opening of the art exhibition, representing students’ work involving inclusive design, etc.
And I’m part of the show!
Three of my pieces are, actually (*dusts shoulders*).
The three pictured are Tactile Tendencies (October 2011), Soft Spoken (December 2010), and The Other F-word (March 2011). I am very excited and honoured to be a part of this. Finally: I combined two great loves of mine, maps and mail.

The world map is above my bed on a board, with pins stuck in to track/represent the pen-pals I have from different places. Yellow are the pen pals I know [IRL], blue are the pen pals I don’t know [IRL], orange are the post cards I’ve received via PostCrossing, and white is Toronto (where I live).
Around the board are some mail art things: a couple I’ve made, but I’d like it to be all the little things people send me along with their amazing letters.
I also hope this will help me with my geography. Elija: loves maps; terrible at geography.
