PRIDE’S A-COMIN’!!!

I am at my parents’ house embroidering a disquiet that only “PRIDE” can bring. My mixed feelings about “PRIDE” are well summarized in this comic, but there’s other stuff, too. (The whole pride/shame dichotomy etc, that I’m sure I’ll write something about it later, because it’s been brewing for over a year now.)

Anyways, these embroidery pieces: they are the first of a few; I feel as though I’d like to make many, many more that say “DIE CIS SCUM” (don’t get me wrong, I have cis friends and I love them, but that it because they are not scum), because the “violence” behind such a message might actually get people’s attention and notice.

Also, embroidering anything with the word “DIE” in it is awesome.

The main material is a cotton linen, with whiskers machine sewn. The middle section/nose is suede! Meow!

While hanging out with a friend, I was thinking over some bow tie designs. She kept suggesting cat themed ones, and so we kind of co-designed this. So I made it for her (& Skye).

I like this design; I am less sure about my material choices. I do like both of these materials, and they could work together well, but maybe with a more subtle design. Good trial and error, however: I’m enjoying myself.

This one came out mostly how I hoped, though I may still redesign it. I had an original concept that I tweaked when it came to making the patterns, so I think I’ll go back and make my original idea.

I love these printed cottons. Great to work with, and combining one of my favourite colour pallets with one of my favourite shapes (circles).

I have a folder on my desktop titled “The Bow Ties of June” that is filling up well.

Bro, do you even Bow Tie?

So I decided to leave the house today (whut?) so I could check out material for wedding bow ties, buy material for new design bow ties, and buy buttons for monster eyes.
Of course, I wore a bow tie.
Then, while on my bike stopped at a light waiting to cross, a guy with a camera ran up to me an asked if he could take my photo for Vice Magazine online ‘fashion trends’ section.
Uh, obviously.
Then I mentioned that I design/make bow ties, and yes I have a business card. But oh wait, this one has a monster on it cause that’s also a thing that I design and make.
Then he said I was the most interesting person he has met, and I did not disagree.

This photo shows what you need to know visually to understand the following story.

As I’ve said, yesterday was my convocation from OCAD University. I graduated with a Bachelor of Design, and was thus dressed much like a Slytherin, in a black robe with a green and grey “hood.” Our school president, seen above, had on even more billowing robes than us, though their extent is as clearly seen in that picture.
While waiting to cross the stage ourselves (split up by majors), my peers and I watched some people do stupid things as they crossed the stage before shaking the President’s hand. My major finally filed out to line up back stage. With only about twenty people ahead of me, I heard some of my friends in conversation about their crossing the stage,
“What are you going to do?”
“I’m going to shake Snape’s hand and then cry.”

I then laughed so hard, and for so long, I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to stop before my own name was called.

This is probably the only thing I will really remember from the day, as it was the only moment I wasn’t filled with anxiety.
