New shelves (and stuff) up!
The shelf with my mini monsters in it is one that I made from a drawer (that’s why it’s kind of crap); the framed prints are from my very talented and amazing friend Amanda.
The dinosaur head was made by another great and talented fried of mine, Kendall.
The “LET’S SAY YOU’VE GONE BACK IN TIME” poster is by Ryan North, as is the Mini T-Rex.
Then there’s the lovely Mei’s poster from DFTBA, signed by John Green himself.
I love my room.
Redesigned work space!
Trying to start thesis right = making my home studio (/bedroom) a good working environment. The big white boards a foam core (aka poor man’s cork board): the goal is to cover/fill them with ideas, inspiration, sketches, works-in-progress, etc.
The bulletin board is for assorted notes, etc, and wonderful things I get in the mail from my awesome array of pen pals.
Also, my desk is crazy clean!
Seriously. It’s usually much worse.
Sneak peek!
Today I installed my Cut and Paste Poetry series at Oz Studios. The group show, A Collection, has its opening night this Thursday. If you’re in Toronto, come and check it out! It’s a great space, and the rest of the show [that I’ve seen so far] is definitely worth a look-see. (It’s up until the 31st of you can’t make the opening.)
Steal Like an Artist by Austin Kleon & annotated by Elija Montgomery (me)
I’ve decided to start writing in my books; annotating them with my thoughts, etc. Leaving a bit of me within the pages; co-authoring my favourite books.
Steal Like an Artist is one of the most inspiring, light-a-fire-under-you-butt, anxiety-relieving books… ever. I, uh, highly recommend it.
Other bits I’ve underlined (but didn’t scan) include:
You have to be curious about the world in which you live.
It’s the act of making things and doing our work that we figure out who we are.
You need to find a way to bring your body into your work.
Take time to be bored.
Don’t throw any of yourself away.
“It’s not that people are mean or cruel, they’re just busy.”
If you ever find you’re the most talented person in the room, you need to find another room.
What makes us interesting isn’t just what we’ve experienced, but also what we haven’t experienced.
