So I’m starting to sample techniques in Illustrator. At least, that’s what I’ve realized I’m doing.
I’ve switched mediums, but my process is the same. The more I sample, the more ideas I start having, and the more creative I feel.
It’s very encouraging.
FUN FACT: I’m lying in bed, not thirty seconds ago, trying to fall asleep, and all I can think about is this and how much I love it.
Then I was thinking this: Amanda is someone who, if I wasn’t friends with her -and only knew her by her designs, the things she makes, or just by association- I would probably cry and obsess over her work wishing I knew her and that we were total BFFs, etc.
And then I thought: I should blog about that immediately.
Aaaannnndddd back to dreaming about colourful geometry.
Colours: sorted.
The fur is coloured with a pale ink undercoat, and colour variance/highlights were added with Sharpies. This use of colouring isn’t necessarily lightfast, however, it doesn’t rub off or change the hand of the material. So… that’s more important, and that’s what I’m going with.
The piece of navy material on top of the eye is a swatch of suede that I’ll be using for the eyelids, gular skin, and palms of the hands (the palms of the hands will be the reverse side of the material to the eyelids/gular skin).
The fur will be lighter/more green on the head and hands, but darker/bluer on the arms and feet.
Like, there’s just no escaping my original monster friend.
More testing!
I have this wonderful large amount of fun fur, which is great and very close to what I’m going for, but not quite right. I want it to be… greener. Closer to this monster, or this one.
I used disperse dyes today, to try and bring it to a closer colour match. The fun fur took the colour well, but due to the heat it required to set it, it fused and melted the fur a bit too much… I brushed it out, but it changed the handle of the material significantly—some of it was damaged too much and broke off.
Further testing is required, but when it comes down to it, the look of it will be more important to the feel.
I had so much fun making these business cards last night, that I had to keep drawing these monsters.
Business cards!
I’m going to a maker-mixer-thing tonight, so I made some special business cards to hand out.
They’re simple and fun, and hopefully alluring and memorable. So excited!
(Might as well ask for a USEFUL miracle.)
My thesis work is coming along!
It is hand dyed cheesecloth that I’ve embedded into acrylic. There are 32 pieces that make a cube puzzle, but you can also play with the pieces individually.
GGUUUUUHHHHHHHHHHH-HHHHNNNNGGGGGGGG.
This is one of those amazing things that I can’t seem to fathom words for and just causes me make strange guttural noise of want. Also induces pica and I just want to put it in my mouth.
YEP.
Dear raw silk my parents brought me back from Cambodia:
I will now turn you into bow ties.

Another page from my sketchbook, playing with previously cut circles from another book I’ve added/subtracted/altered. I really like circles, as well as text. I think circles are a fascinating and underused shape [as frame].
